Former Military Chief Warns of Escalating Pak-India Tensions

ISLAMABAD: A former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Zubair Mahmood (Retd) has issued a stark warning regarding the unresolved disputes between Pakistan and India, stating that neglecting these issues could lead to more severe confrontations in the future.
Retired General Zubair Mahmood Hayat made these remarks during the closing session of the second Islamabad Non-Proliferation Conference, organized by the Strategic Vision Institute (SVI).
Gen Hayat emphasized that simply resolving crises without addressing their root causes only paves the way for future conflicts.
He pointed out that the longstanding Kashmir issue cannot be dismissed as merely an administrative matter and highlighted the importance of the Indus Waters Treaty, which he believes should not be used as a tool for political leverage.
The implications of Gen Hayat’s statements resonate deeply within the region, as repeated crises between the nuclear-armed neighbours could escalate into more dangerous scenarios.
The unresolved Kashmir dispute and water-sharing issues remain critical flashpoints that could destabilize not only Pakistan and India but also the broader South Asian region.
Looking ahead, stakeholders are urged to engage in meaningful dialogue to address these pressing issues.
The international community’s role in facilitating discussions on Kashmir and the Indus Waters Treaty could be pivotal in preventing future conflicts and fostering stability in the region.
