LAHORE: In a significant crackdown on pollution, Lahore authorities have fined 1,763 smoke-emitting vehicles this month, imposing a total penalty of Rs5.5 million. The enforcement action is part of ongoing efforts to combat air quality deterioration in the city.

During the same period, officials impounded 739 vehicles and offloaded overloaded ones. Lahore Commissioner Nauman Yousuf highlighted the urgency of addressing pollution, stating that inspections of 2,018 industrial units led to the sealing of 41 units and 146 restaurants for violating environmental standards.

This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to improving air quality, which has become a pressing concern for residents. The actions taken against pollution sources, including the registration of eight FIRs and a fine of Rs240,000 for burning crop residues, reflect a broader strategy to enhance public health and environmental sustainability.

Looking ahead, authorities are expected to intensify inspections and enforcement measures, with further meetings planned to evaluate the effectiveness of current strategies. The ongoing efforts aim to foster a cleaner and healthier environment for Lahore’s citizens.
