Arthur Gea Shocks Ben Shelton in Shanghai Masters Upset

SHANGHAI: In a stunning upset at the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, France’s world number 56 Arthur Gea eliminated US Open finalist Ben Shelton in the third round, marking Shelton as the tournament’s biggest casualty thus far.

Gea secured a hard-fought victory over the big-serving American, winning 7-6(7/5), 7-6(7/3) to achieve the most significant win of his career.

Following the match, the world number four Shelton admitted, “I got outplayed today,” attributing his performance to fitness issues after competing in the Davis Cup last month and skipping the Japan Open due to health concerns.

This defeat raises questions about Shelton’s readiness as he navigates the demanding ATP Tour, particularly after his recent loss in the US Open final to Zverev.

The 24-year-old expressed that jet lag and physical fatigue contributed to his performance, stating, “That’s just the way this tour is sometimes.” Gea, buoyed by his recent success, will next face 13th seed Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic.

Gea’s victory not only boosts his confidence but also highlights his remarkable progress this year, having clinched his first ATP title in July. As he prepares for his next match, the implications of this upset could resonate throughout the tournament, potentially reshaping the competition landscape as top players vie for ranking points and momentum.
