Who Is Aamer Raza, Pakistan’s New Strategic Commander?

Islamabad: Lieutenant General Syed Aamer Raza has taken on one of the most significant assignments of his military career after being appointed as the first commander of Pakistan’s National Strategic Command (NSC) under the National Command Authority.
Raza was promoted to the rank of four-star general and appointed to the key position on July 24, 2026, by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The appointment places him at the helm of a command responsible for overseeing matters linked to Pakistan’s strategic capabilities and national security framework.
A veteran of the Pakistan Army’s Armoured Corps, General Raza brings with him nearly four decades of military experience, having served in some of the army’s most important operational and leadership roles. His previous assignments include Chief of General Staff (CGS), Commander IV Corps Lahore, and Chairman Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT).
From 6th Lancers to High Command
General Aamer Raza was commissioned into the 6th Lancers of the Pakistan Army in 1988, beginning a career centred around armoured warfare and military leadership.
Over the years, he served in various command and staff positions, gaining experience in combat operations, training, strategic planning and defence management.
He commanded the 6th Lancers from November 2007 to September 2009 and later led an armoured brigade, an infantry brigade in South Waziristan, and an infantry division.
His professional journey also included key staff responsibilities, including serving as Chief of Staff at II Corps and heading the Weapons and Equipment Directorate as Director General.
Education and Professional Training
Beyond battlefield experience, General Raza has an extensive academic background.
He is a graduate of the Command and Staff College, Quetta, and the National Defence University (NDU), Islamabad.
He holds a degree in International Relations from the University of Nottingham and has studied Arts and Science of Warfare as well as Defence and Strategic Studies at NDU.
Raza has also contributed to military education, serving as an instructor at the School of Armour and Mechanized Warfare, Director of the Faculty of Research and Doctrinal Studies, and Chief Instructor at the Command and Staff College, Quetta.
Leadership Roles Before NSC
Before his appointment to the National Strategic Command, Raza held several influential positions within the Pakistan Army.
In April 2020, he took command of Heavy Industries Taxila, Pakistan’s major defence production organisation. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General on October 11, 2022.
Following the events of May 9, 2023, Raza was appointed as the Commander of IV Corps Lahore, one of the Pakistan Army’s most prominent formations.
Later, in January 2025, he was appointed Chief of General Staff, succeeding Lieutenant General Avais Dastgir, who moved on to command V Corps Karachi.
Leading Pakistan’s New Strategic Command
General Raza’s appointment as the first commander of the National Strategic Command marks a new chapter in his career and places him among the top figures in Pakistan’s military leadership.
