‘Hellhole’ Comment Sparks Fury: India Hits Back at Trump

New Delhi: India has issued a strong response to remarks attributed to US President Donald Trump, after he shared a statement on social media referring to the country as a “hellhole.”
According to media reports, the controversial phrase was originally used by American radio host Michael Savage and later reposted by Trump without additional comment, sparking criticism in India.
Responding to the development, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the statement as “uninformative, inappropriate, and in poor taste.” He emphasized that such remarks do not reflect the longstanding ties between India and the United States, which are built on mutual respect and shared interests.
Political reaction within India was also swift. The opposition party Indian National Congress condemned the remark as deeply insulting, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to formally raise the issue with Washington.

Meanwhile, the US Embassy sought to downplay the controversy, noting that Trump has previously referred to India as a “great country” and described its leadership as a “good friend.”
Analysts note that despite periodic tensions, ties between New Delhi and Washington remain significant, with both sides currently engaged in discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral trade. Reports also highlight the presence of a large Indian diaspora in the United States, estimated at around 5.5 million people.
Trump has faced criticism in the past for making blunt and controversial statements about various countries and immigrant communities, often triggering diplomatic reactions.
