WhatsApp to end support for older Android phones

Islamabad:  Users of older Android smartphones may soon lose access to WhatsApp as Meta prepares to discontinue support for devices running outdated versions of the operating system.

According to reports, WhatsApp will stop supporting Android phones running versions earlier than Android 6, including Android 5 and 5.1, from September 9, 2026.

The move means users with some smartphones that are around a decade old could no longer be able to use the messaging platform unless they upgrade to a device running a supported Android version.

WhatsApp regularly introduces new features, interface improvements and enhanced privacy and security measures, which require compatibility with newer operating systems.

Meta is ending support for older Android versions to strengthen security and privacy protections while ensuring more stable app performance, according to the report.

Users affected by the change are advised to check their phone’s Android version and consider upgrading their operating system or device if it no longer meets WhatsApp’s requirements.
