What is Panda Diplomacy?

Beijing: China’s practice of sending giant pandas to other countries as part of international cooperation is widely known as “panda diplomacy.”

The practice gained renewed international attention in 1972, when China presented two giant pandas to the United States following President Richard Nixon’s historic visit to Beijing. The pandas became a symbol of the improving relationship between the two countries.

Since 1984, China has generally replaced permanent panda gifts with agreements under which pandas are loaned to overseas zoos for conservation and research cooperation.

Under such agreements, panda cubs born abroad remain the property of China and are eventually returned to the country.

Giant pandas have become an important symbol of China’s wildlife conservation efforts and have also played a distinctive role in its international cultural and diplomatic exchanges. 

Through panda cooperation, China combines conservation, scientific research and the global appeal of one of its most recognizable animals.

Giant Pandas Will Stay in Atlanta for 10-Year Stay

Chengdu: Two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, have left the Chinese city of Chengdu for Atlanta, Georgia, where they will stay for the next 10 years under a cooperation agreement.

According to Chinese officials, the pandas departed Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport aboard a chartered flight on Sunday morning. A farewell ceremony was held at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding before their departure.

Special arrangements were made to ensure the pandas’ health and comfort during the long journey. Their supplies included fresh bamboo, bamboo shoots, apples and emergency medication. The pandas also underwent special training designed to help reduce stress during the flight.

Chinese and American experts will monitor the animals throughout their journey. After arriving in Atlanta, the pandas will undergo quarantine and medical examinations. Chinese experts and care staff will also remain with them during the initial period of their stay.
