Uncontrolled SpaceX Rocket Crashes Into Moon

An uncontrolled section of a SpaceX rocket has crashed into the Moon, highlighting growing concerns over space debris as scientific and commercial missions beyond Earth continue to increase.
As per CNN, the roughly 4,000-kilogram rocket stage struck the lunar surface at an estimated speed of 8,690 kilometers per hour after drifting through space for months without the ability to alter its course.
Scientists say the impact poses no threat to either the Moon or Earth, but it has reignited discussions about managing abandoned spacecraft and rocket components.
The rocket was launched on January 15, 2025, as part of a SpaceX Falcon 9 mission carrying a lunar lander. After completing its role in the mission, the rocket’s second stage was expected to follow a controlled disposal path.
However, astronomers earlier this year reported that the upper stage had exhausted its fuel, leaving it unable to perform course corrections and sending it on an unavoidable trajectory toward the Moon.
Experts had predicted the impact would occur at 11:35 am. Pakistan time on Wednesday. Although the collision itself was not directly visible, scientists are expected to confirm the event by analyzing telescope observations and comparing before-and-after images of the lunar surface.
Reports indicate the rocket struck near the Einstein Crater on the Moon’s near side, creating an estimated crater between 65 and 90 feet wide.
The impact occurred while sunlight illuminated the region, making it nearly impossible to observe the faint flash produced by the collision. Even in areas experiencing nighttime, astronomers had only split second to detect the brief burst of light.
Researchers believe the impact may have generated a dust plume rising nearly 100 kilometers above the lunar surface, potentially captured by some telescopes.
However, spacecraft orbiting the Moon were not positioned to record the collision directly.
Scientists say lunar orbiters will now search for fresh impact marks by comparing newly captured images with older photographs.
Because the rocket fragment measured only about 14 meters in length and struck a surface nearly 385,000 kilometers from Earth, confirming the exact impact site and analyzing resulting crater could take anywhere from several hours to several weeks.
The incident underscores increasing challenge of tracking and managing space debris as more governments and private companies expand their lunar exploration programs, raising questions about how future missions can better prevent abandoned spacecraft from becoming long-term hazards in space.
