Sindh Announces Daily Monitoring of Fake News on Media

KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced the implementation of a comprehensive daily monitoring mechanism to curb the proliferation of fake news across mainstream and social media platforms.
The initiative aims to combat misinformation and ensure strict oversight of digital and broadcast content throughout the province, according to senior provincial authorities.
Addressing a press conference, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that the unchecked spread of unverified information has become a grave threat to societal harmony and public trust. He emphasized that a dedicated monitoring cell will operate around the clock to track, analyze, and counter fabricated stories circulating on digital networks and news outlets, ensuring that accountability is strictly maintained.
The announcement comes amid rising concerns regarding digital disinformation and its potential to manipulate public sentiment, damage reputations, and trigger unnecessary panic.
Media rights organizations and government stakeholders have long debated the balance between regulating harmful falsehoods and safeguarding freedom of expression, a delicate line the provincial administration intends to navigate through institutional oversight.
Following this initial rollout, the Sindh Information Department is expected to issue detailed standard operating procedures for the monitoring unit and collaborate with digital platform regulators.
