ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a high-level meeting with a distinguished delegation of national and international medical experts on Tuesday to formulate an aggressive strategy to curb the rapidly escalating diabetes crisis in Pakistan.

The consultation focused on immediate policy interventions, early screening frameworks, and modernizing specialized treatment infrastructure across urban and rural healthcare centers.

During the briefing in Islamabad, the medical specialists highlighted the alarming prevalence of metabolic disorders in the country, noting that over 33 million citizens are currently living with diabetes.

The delegation emphasized the urgent necessity of expanding specialized care clinics, integrating digital health monitoring tools, and ensuring affordable access to insulin and essential diagnostic supplies.

Prime Minister Shehbaz commended the medical community for their actionable recommendations and reaffirmed the federal government’s resolve to elevate public health priorities.

The sharp rise in diabetes places an immense burden on Pakistan’s national economy and healthcare delivery systems, consuming significant household revenues and public resources.

Experts warned that sedentary routines, insufficient public awareness, and limited primary screening mechanisms have compounded the national health challenge.

Strengthening preventive care and implementing lifestyle awareness programs in educational institutes are seen as critical steps to prevent long-term cardiovascular and renal complications associated with metabolic diseases.

Moving forward, the Prime Minister directed the Ministry of National Health Services to collaborate with provincial health departments to draft a comprehensive National Diabetes Control Action Plan within two weeks.

The federal government is expected to launch targeted screening drives and collaborate with international healthcare organizations to enhance medicine accessibility nationwide.
