NZ Cricket Defends Domestic T20 Competition Amid Criticism
News Desk
WELLINGTON: New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced on Wednesday its decision to launch a domestic T20 competition, NZ20, in response to ongoing criticism regarding its management of a Deloitte report that advocated for joining Australia’s Big Bash League.
The announcement, made in March, has drawn ire from cricket legends Richard Hadlee and former NZC President Lesley Murdoch, who have criticized the governing body for a perceived lack of transparency and its refusal to share the Deloitte report with stakeholders. NZC Chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon acknowledged that the organization could have communicated its decision more effectively.
Puketapu-Lyndon emphasized that the Deloitte report was one of four expert analyses considered by the board, which also included evaluations of community cricket, high-performance pathways, and fan engagement. She stated, “Its analysis favoured exploring the Big Bash opportunity further, for reasons including financial upside and governance, but it also said weighing the options was for the board and encouraged us to continue exploring both options.”
As NZC moves forward with the NZ20 competition, the implications for domestic cricket and its financial viability remain to be seen. The governing body is expected to engage further with stakeholders to address concerns and clarify its strategic direction in the coming months.
