Nine Miners Killed in Quetta Coal Mine Collapse

Quetta: A deadly coal mine collapse in Balochistan has once again raised concerns over workers’ safety, as rescue teams recovered the bodies of at least nine miners trapped inside a mine in the Sorange area of Quetta.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed the recovery of the bodies, while rescue operations continued following the collapse.

According to mine owner Qurban Jogezai, the incident was triggered by a methane gas explosion. He said around 42 labourers were working inside the mine at the time of the accident. All the trapped workers belonged to Shangla district, he added.

In another coal mining accident reported on the same day, a labourer was killed in Harnai district after a large boulder fell on him while he was working inside a mine, police sources told APP.

Rescue teams reached the site after receiving information about the incident and shifted the worker’s body to a nearby hospital for legal procedures.

Coal mine accidents remain a recurring issue in Balochistan and Sindh, where miners often face hazardous working conditions due to limited safety measures, outdated equipment, and weak enforcement of safety regulations.

Earlier this month, four miners were killed and five others injured when a mine wall collapsed near Meting railway station in Thatta district. The victims were working at Ibrahim Coal Mines located in the Kohistani belt of Thatta.

The repeated incidents have renewed calls from labour rights groups for stronger safety standards, improved monitoring, and better protection for coal mine workers across Pakistan.
