Rains affected women in coastal areas: NDMA

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s ongoing monsoon spell has taken a heavy toll on women and children, with 101 of the 238 people killed in rain-related incidents since June 14 belonging to these two groups, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The latest NDMA situation report showed that torrential rains, flooding, roof collapses and other incidents have killed 46 women and 55 children across the country, while another 58 women and 35 children have sustained injuries.

Men accounted for 82 deaths and 94 injuries during the same period.

Balochistan has emerged as the worst-affected province in terms of fatalities, with 75 people killed, including 23 women and 29 children. Punjab reported 55 deaths, while 48 people lost their lives in Sindh amid widespread urban flooding, including in Karachi.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa recorded 47 deaths, including 17 women and 12 children, while eight people died in Gilgit-Baltistan and four in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. One death was reported in Islamabad after a man drowned in a nullah.

Punjab recorded the highest number of injuries, with 66 people hurt, followed by Balochistan with 52 and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa with 42. Sindh reported 16 injuries, while eight were recorded in AJK and three in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Thousands of homes damaged

The rains have also caused extensive damage to housing and infrastructure across the country.

According to the NDMA, 3,374 houses have been damaged, including 2,365 partially damaged and 1,009 completely destroyed. More than 1,500 livestock have also perished.

The rain-related damage includes around 11.5 kilometres of roads, 22 bridges and five shops, disrupting connectivity and affecting communities in several areas.

Relief operations expanded

National and provincial disaster management authorities have continued rescue and relief operations in the affected regions.

In Balochistan, the NDMA and King Suleiman Relief Fund distributed food packages and plastic mats in several districts, while thousands of additional food packs were dispatched to Quetta, Lasbela, Khuzdar, Pishin, Killa Abdullah and Killa Saifullah.

The provincial disaster management authority has also established relief camps for displaced families in Balochistan, providing tents, medical care, drinking water, sanitation facilities, food and other essential items.

A temporary school or seminary has also been established for children in Killa Saifullah to help maintain access to education for affected communities.

Relief supplies are also being dispatched to Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan, with NDMA and partner organisations distributing thousands of food packages.

Rescue and rehabilitation continue

Rescue teams remain active in several rain-hit areas. The PDMA Balochistan rescue team was dispatched to Khanani in Pishin district for search and rescue operations.

In Mach, heavy flooding damaged the City Link Bridge, prompting authorities to divert traffic through an alternate route while rehabilitation work on the bridge continued.

The latest figures underscore the growing humanitarian and infrastructure impact of the monsoon rains, with authorities continuing relief, rescue and rehabilitation efforts in affected parts of the country.
