MULTAN: Five young men in their twenties were killed in the early hours of Monday after their speeding vehicle struck a concrete road divider, collided with the boundary wall of a vacant plot, and burst into flames on Bosan Road.
Emergency responders confirmed that all five occupants, residents of the nearby Shujaabad tehsil, succumbed to traumatic head injuries and severe burns before rescue teams could pull them from the burning wreckage.
According to an incident report compiled by local police and emergency service Rescue 1122, the fatal crash occurred around 4:00 am when the driver of the Toyota Corolla lost control due to excessive speed.
A passerby alerted the emergency control room at 4:15 am, prompting immediate deployment of fire tenders and ambulances. Firefighters managed to extinguish the intense vehicle fire, while paramedics subsequently shifted the charred bodies to Multan’s Nishtar Hospital for post-mortem examinations and formal identification.
Officials identified three of the deceased as youth aged 22, 23, and 28, while the remaining two victims were estimated to be between 24 and 25 years of age.
The tragic incident once again underscores the escalating crisis of vehicular safety and reckless driving across Punjab.
Official statistics released by Rescue 1122 indicate that the province witnessed 43,160 road crashes in the month of May alone, which caused 434 fatalities and left over 23,000 individuals critically injured, predominantly due to over-speeding, distracted driving, and lack of lane discipline.
District authorities and police investigators have launched an inquiry to ascertain whether mechanical failure or driver fatigue contributed to the high-speed collision alongside over-speeding.
Meanwhile, hospital officials confirmed that the mortal remains will be handed over to the grieving families in Shujaabad following legal formalities, as civic organizations renew calls for strict electronic surveillance and night-time speed enforcement on Multan’s main arterial corridors.
