DI Khan: Five police officers who had been assigned to guard polio workers sustained injuries when unidentified assailants targeted them in Dera Ismail Khan’s Musazai neighbourhood on Thursday.

The police chief reported that six to eight suspected militants ambushed them, opened fire, and tossed hand grenades at the police van while they were being transported in convoy to a nearby vaccination station.

The on-duty police officers retaliated and they had a severe fire exchange with the attackers. However, five policemen were struck by bullets.

One terrorist was also hurt, but they were all able to escape. The cops were transported to a nearby hospital, where they received treatment. A search effort has also been started nearby in the interim.

Provincial data shows that approximately 22.5 million children have been vaccinated in Punjab, while more than 9.693 million children received polio drops in Sindh. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, over 6.833 million children have been immunized.

Meanwhile, around 2.4 million children have been vaccinated in Balochistan, with additional reports indicating that more than 6,000 children in remote areas have also been reached during the campaign.

The campaign is being conducted simultaneously in Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan, as both countries remain among the last in the world where polio transmission persists.
