Emerging Island Near Moria Loop Bund Poses Threat to Indus Embankments

LARKANA: An emerging island near the Moria Loop Bund threatens to inundate agricultural land and urban settlements as the Indus River shifts its course. Experts are raising alarms over the potential for large-scale flooding due to the river’s recent strong flows and changing dynamics.

Jamil Ahmed Sangi, superintending engineer of the North Dadu Division, highlighted that the island has expanded significantly, posing a risk to the embankments.

He noted that the department initially anticipated the river would cut through the island, but instead, it has widened, creating a new obstruction during the peak flood season.

This situation is particularly concerning as receding water levels can cause more damage than rising ones, especially at the junction of the Sukkur-Larkana embankment and the Moria Loop Bund.

The ongoing changes could have dire implications for local communities, threatening livelihoods and increasing the risk of displacement.

Authorities are expected to conduct further assessments and develop strategies to mitigate the risks posed by the shifting river course. Immediate action is necessary to protect vulnerable areas and ensure the safety of residents living near the embankments.
