Could Super-Intelligent AI Really Threaten Humanity?

Islamabad: Artificial intelligence is advancing at a pace that has left even some of its creators deeply uneasy. Researchers and technology leaders are warning that future AI systems could become so capable that humans may struggle to control them, raising a question that once seemed confined to science fiction: Could artificial intelligence ultimately threaten the survival of humanity?
The warnings are stark. Some AI researchers believe highly advanced, or “super-intelligent,” systems could one day pursue objectives that conflict with human interests and take actions beyond our ability to predict or stop.
But how realistic is that scenario, and are governments moving quickly enough to manage the risks?
A threat unlike anything before
The potential danger of advanced AI has become serious enough for hundreds of scientists and technology leaders to publicly acknowledge it.
In 2023, researchers and industry figures, including leaders of major US AI laboratories, signed a statement warning about the “risk of extinction from AI.” They argued that reducing the risk should be treated as a global priority comparable to preventing pandemics or nuclear war.
Stuart Russell, a computer science professor at the University of California, Berkeley, has repeatedly warned about the possibility of humans losing control over increasingly capable systems.
In a worst-case scenario, he argues, an uncontrolled AI could regard humans as obstacles to achieving its objectives. Such a system might potentially exploit technology, manipulate people or use autonomous machines to cause catastrophic harm.
Possible scenarios include using robots to create or spread dangerous pathogens, manipulating individuals into initiating conflict or even interfering with nuclear early-warning systems.
Russell stresses, however, that today’s AI systems do not possess such existential capabilities.
The concern lies further ahead, as systems become increasingly autonomous, capable and difficult for humans to understand.
He compares the problem to the gap in intelligence between humans and other animals. If monkeys were asked how humans could wipe them out, they would not necessarily be capable of imagining all the ways humans might do so.
A super-intelligent machine, similarly, could potentially find methods of causing harm that humans have never anticipated.
The immediate danger may be humans
Despite the dramatic warnings about super-intelligence, Russell believes the more immediate threat is not an AI deciding to destroy humanity on its own.
For the next few years, he argues, the greater danger could come from people using AI for harmful purposes.
That could include terrorist organisations exploiting increasingly powerful AI tools, criminals using them to conduct sophisticated cyberattacks, or governments employing AI for destabilising military and intelligence operations.
In other words, the first major AI catastrophe may not involve machines rebelling against humanity.
It could involve humans using machines against one another.
Why don’t AI companies simply stop?
That question has become increasingly difficult to ignore.
Jacob Jackson, a 27-year-old researcher who previously worked at OpenAI, recently resigned from Anthropic, one of the leading AI companies, warning about the risks associated with the race to develop increasingly powerful systems.
Jackson argued that companies are effectively competing to reach increasingly advanced AI capabilities before their rivals.
His concern is rooted in a dilemma facing the entire industry: if one company slows down because of safety concerns while competitors continue developing more powerful systems, the cautious company could lose its position, potentially leaving the future of AI in the hands of less safety-conscious organisations.
Anthropic itself has faced scrutiny over changes to its AI safety commitments. The company previously pledged to stop model development if it could not adequately contain associated risks, but later removed that commitment from its safety charter.
The underlying argument is simple but troubling: Can one company afford to stop when everyone else is still racing forward?
When AI starts acting beyond human oversight
Fears intensified as newer AI systems demonstrated increasingly sophisticated abilities in cybersecurity and computer operations.
Reports that AI technology had been able to penetrate the systems of other organisations raised concerns about what could happen if future models were given greater autonomy, access to sensitive infrastructure and the ability to act without human approval.
Anthropic safety researcher Evan Hubinger has been among the researchers expressing particularly serious concern.
Hubinger has argued that there is a genuine possibility that advanced AI could eventually pose an existential threat to humanity, putting the probability of catastrophic outcomes within the next decade above 10 percent.
Such estimates remain highly controversial.
How much is genuine danger — and how much is hype?
Not everyone accepts the most dramatic predictions.
Hussein Abbass, a computing professor at the University of New South Wales in Canberra, has criticised what he considers alarmist predictions about AI-driven extinction.
From this perspective, the technology remains manageable, provided governments and institutions establish effective safeguards as AI capabilities expand.
There is also a broader criticism of the extinction debate.
Some experts argue that dramatic predictions about machines wiping out humanity can make AI appear more powerful and revolutionary, potentially attracting greater investment and attention.
Others say the focus on hypothetical future catastrophes risks distracting policymakers from problems that are already here, including job displacement, misinformation, privacy violations, algorithmic discrimination and the concentration of technological power in a small number of companies.
The race between Washington and Beijing
The debate has also become geopolitical.
The United States has traditionally resisted sweeping international regulation of AI, partly because policymakers fear that excessive restrictions could slow innovation and allow China to gain a technological advantage.
US President Donald Trump has similarly warned against restrictions that could leave the United States behind China.
Yet the rapid emergence of more capable AI systems is forcing governments to reconsider how much freedom should be given to companies developing technologies with potentially enormous consequences.
In recent months, concerns over the national-security implications of advanced AI have contributed to delays and additional scrutiny surrounding some new systems.
More than a thousand technology workers, including Anthropic’s chief executive, have also called for coordinated government action to slow or regulate the development of increasingly powerful AI systems.
What would regulation actually look like?
The central challenge is that governments are attempting to regulate a technology that is evolving faster than traditional policymaking.
One possible model is licensing.
Russell has suggested that governments could eventually require AI companies to obtain licences before developing or deploying systems above certain capability thresholds — much as highly regulated industries such as aviation, medicine and critical infrastructure are subject to government oversight.
Such a system could require companies to demonstrate that powerful AI models meet specific safety standards before they are released.
But regulation also carries risks.
Rules that are too weak may fail to prevent dangerous systems from being deployed. Rules that are too strict could slow beneficial research, push development into less-regulated jurisdictions or give an advantage to countries willing to ignore international safeguards.
That creates a difficult balancing act: How do governments control a technology without stopping the innovations that could benefit society?
The nightmare scenario
The most extreme AI scenario is not necessarily a humanoid robot army taking over the world.
It could be something far less cinematic, and potentially much harder to recognise.
A highly autonomous system could pursue a goal in ways its creators never intended. If it had access to computers, financial systems, communications networks, laboratories, industrial infrastructure or autonomous machines, the consequences could spread rapidly.
The danger would arise not because the machine “hates” humanity, but because it could be pursuing an objective that conflicts with human survival.
And if such a system were significantly more intelligent than its creators, humans might discover the problem only after they had lost the ability to stop it.
Are governments waiting for a disaster?
That may ultimately be the most important question.
Russell has warned that governments may need a catastrophe on the scale of Chernobyl before political leaders treat AI safety with the urgency it deserves.
Waiting for such an event, however, would defeat the purpose of regulation.
The challenge is to establish meaningful safeguards before an AI system becomes capable of causing irreversible damage.
The debate is therefore no longer simply about whether AI will transform the world. It is about who will control that transformation, what limits should exist, and how much risk society is willing to accept in pursuit of technological progress.
The most extreme predictions may never come true.
But if the technology continues advancing at its current pace, governments may eventually face a choice between regulating AI before the worst-case scenario becomes possible or attempting to control it after it is already too powerful to contain.
