China Emerges as Key Supplier of Water Technology to Markets
News Desk
BEIJING: China is positioning itself as a leading supplier of water technology, catering to water-scarce nations across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. As domestic freshwater resources dwindle, the Chinese government is heavily investing in manufactured freshwater solutions, industry experts report.
Chinese companies are actively exporting desalination membranes, filtration equipment, and engineering services to countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, often leveraging the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to connect their capital and infrastructure projects with developing markets. In 2025, China exported over $2 billion worth of water filtering and purifying machinery, marking a 25% increase from $1.6 billion in 2020, according to UN Comtrade data.
This surge in water technology exports not only highlights China’s growing influence in global water management but also reflects a shift in Gulf states, traditionally known for their desalination capabilities, towards Chinese manufacturers for large-scale equipment production. This collaboration could enhance water security in these regions, which are increasingly facing challenges due to climate change and population growth.
Looking ahead, industry analysts anticipate further partnerships and investments in water technology as countries seek sustainable solutions to their water crises. Upcoming international forums and trade exhibitions will likely showcase China’s advancements in this sector, solidifying its role as a pivotal player in the global water technology market.
