Chenab Swells as NDMA Issues Flood Warning

Islamabad: With monsoon rains intensifying across parts of the country, authorities have stepped up flood preparedness as rising water levels in the Chenab River and the threat of flash floods in vulnerable regions raise concerns.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday warned that the next 24 to 48 hours could be critical, as medium-level flooding has been reported at several points along the Chenab River, while flash flood risks persist in northern Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan.
According to the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), medium flood levels were recorded at Khanki, Qadirabad and Chiniot Bridge on the Chenab River, while Palkhu Nala at Wazirabad was also flowing at a medium flood level.
The authority said water levels in the Chenab River are expected to rise further at Marala, Khanki, Qadirabad and Chiniot Bridge during the next 24 hours. The water level at Trimmu Barrage is also likely to reach medium flood level.
Low-level flooding continues at several monitoring points, including Kalabagh, Chashma and Taunsa on the Indus River, Marala and Trimmu on the Chenab River, Balloki and Sidhnai on the Ravi River, and Nowshera on the Kabul River.
Meanwhile, urban flooding risks have been identified in several Punjab cities, including Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Jhang, Multan, Hafizabad and Lahore, due to continued heavy rainfall.
The NDMA has directed provincial and district authorities to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of vulnerable areas, keep emergency response teams ready and ensure quick restoration of roads and infrastructure in case of disruptions.
The authority also warned of possible landslides, debris flows and sudden flash floods in mountainous areas during the ongoing monsoon season.
Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel in flood-affected areas, stay away from riverbanks and steep slopes, and avoid crossing flooded roads or streams. Motorists have also been urged to check weather updates and road conditions before travelling.
NDMA said all relevant departments remain on alert and encouraged citizens to stay informed through the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert mobile application for timely warnings and emergency updates.
