Doha: Diplomatic efforts to ease tensions between the United States and Iran have entered a crucial stage, with Qatar expressing optimism that a possible agreement between the two sides could be reached within hours.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majid Al-Ansari said on Tuesday that mediation efforts involving Qatar, Oman, and Pakistan have intensified as regional partners work to facilitate communication between Washington and Tehran.
Al-Ansari clarified that the United States and Iran are not holding direct talks, but mediators are maintaining continuous contact with both sides, exchanging draft proposals and helping bridge differences over a potential agreement.
The discussions are closely linked to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. Qatar said it supports reopening the waterway and restoring normal commercial traffic to prevent further disruption to international trade and energy supplies.
According to the Qatari spokesperson, Iran has proposed imposing a fee or charge on vessels passing through the strait, while the United States has rejected the idea, creating a major point of disagreement in the negotiations.
Qatar emphasized that decisions regarding the strategic waterway should involve regional countries to ensure long-term stability and protect global energy flows.
The latest diplomatic push comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with regional mediators seeking a solution that could reduce the risk of further escalation and stabilize markets.
Al-Ansari said Doha remains hopeful that continued mediation efforts could lead to an understanding between the United States and Iran in the coming hours or days.
