Punjab Offers Cash Incentive for Kitchen Waste Composting

LAHORE: In an innovative push towards environmental sustainability, the Punjab government has announced a cash incentive of up to 30,000 rupees for citizens who successfully convert their daily kitchen waste into useful organic compost.
The initiative was officially launched in connection with World Cleanliness Day to encourage households to adopt eco-friendly waste management practices instead of merely discarding organic refuse into municipal garbage streams.
According to details released by provincial authorities, the program aims to address the mounting challenge of urban solid waste management at the grassroots level.
By motivating households to segregate and process organic scraps, the administration seeks to significantly reduce the volume of trash ending up in overflowing landfills across major urban centers, starting from the provincial capital.
Environmental experts have lauded the move, noting that domestic composting not only curbs methane emissions from decaying food waste in dumpsites but also produces rich fertilizer for home gardens and local agriculture.
As Pakistan faces compounding climate vulnerabilities and urban pollution crises, incentivizing civic responsibility is increasingly being viewed as a crucial policy instrument for sustainable municipal governance.
Officials stated that guidelines for participation, submission of compost samples, and the distribution mechanism for the cash prizes will be disseminated through local government offices and official digital portals.
