Punjab Govt Denies JI Permission for Lahore Rally

LAHORE: The Punjab government has formally refused permission to Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) to hold a public rally in Lahore, citing critical security concerns and potential disruptions to public order.
The decision comes amid heightened security protocols across the provincial capital, where authorities have increasingly clamped down on large public gatherings and demonstrations.
According to administrative sources, the district intelligence committee reviewed the security landscape and concluded that allowing the large-scale gathering at the proposed venue posed significant vulnerability risks.
The provincial home department conveyed the denial to JI leadership, stressing that maintaining public safety and ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow in the metropolitan area remained the primary objective of the administration.
The restriction highlights the ongoing tension between political freedom of assembly and state-enforced security measures in Pakistan’s most populous province. Opposition parties and religious organizations frequently accuse the administration of using security pretexts to stifle political expression, while officials maintain that such measures are vital to preempt potential law-and-order crises and manage sensitive urban logistics.
In response to the government’s refusal, Jamaat-e-Islami leadership has announced an emergency consultative meeting to deliberate on their next course of action. Party officials are expected to weigh legal options, challenge the administrative ban, or announce an alternative strategy to press for their political demands, potentially setting the stage for a confrontation with provincial authorities.
