Islamabad: Pakistan’s newly introduced daily fuel pricing mechanism delivered a sharp increase in petroleum rates on Friday, with high-speed diesel (HSD) recording a steep jump of Rs31.05 per litre while petrol rose by Rs5.44 per litre.

According to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division, the revised prices came into effect on July 18 and will remain valid until July 20. Petrol now costs Rs316.15 per litre, up from Rs310.71, while HSD has climbed from Rs323.30 to Rs354.35 per litre.

The latest revision comes after the federal government shifted from weekly to daily fuel price reviews, a policy introduced amid heightened volatility in global oil markets. Earlier, petroleum prices had been adjusted on a weekly basis following geopolitical tensions triggered by the US-Israel conflict with Iran.

This is the second consecutive increase in fuel prices. In the previous review, petrol and HSD prices had already been raised by Rs13.18 and Rs13.80 per litre, respectively.

The sharp rise in diesel prices is expected to have broader economic implications, as HSD powers heavy transport vehicles, buses, trucks, trains, and agricultural machinery. Higher diesel costs often translate into increased freight charges and production costs, putting upward pressure on the prices of food and other essential goods.

Petrol, widely used by motorists, motorcyclists and rickshaw drivers, remains the primary fuel for daily commuting, meaning the latest increase is also expected to add to the financial burden on households across the country.
