Pak Railways Resumes Fuel Supply via Freight Trains

ISLAMABAD: In a major logistical shift aimed at enhancing transport efficiency, Pakistan Railways has officially resumed the transportation of diesel via freight trains following directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The initiative marks a strategic revival of rail freight for petroleum products, designed to ease highway congestion and reduce logistical bottlenecks across the country.
According to railway officials, the Ministry of Railways has commenced systematic fuel deliveries to Pakistan State Oil (PSO) depots. In the opening phase of this renewed operation, a freight train carrying a substantial 750,000 liters of high-speed diesel successfully departed from Rawalpindi and safely arrived in the Peshawar region.
Transporting petroleum products through the railway network is widely regarded by energy and transport experts as a safer, more cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable alternative to heavy road tankers. The transition is expected to significantly mitigate the wear and tear on national highways while ensuring a secure and uninterrupted fuel supply chain to the northern regions of the country.
Following the successful dispatch of the initial freight loads, railway authorities are slated to expand the schedule to include additional routes.
Further coordination meetings between the railway administration and oil marketing companies are underway to scale up logistical capacity and integrate freight schedules with national energy demands.
