Iran Claims US Drone Shot Down

Tehran: Tensions between Iran and the United States have intensified after Tehran claimed its forces had brought down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a claim Washington has not yet confirmed or rejected.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its aerospace forces targeted the unmanned aircraft using an advanced air defense system. Iranian state media reported that further details of the operation would be released later.

The reported incident has drawn attention because the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical waterways, through which a significant portion of global energy shipments passes. Any military escalation in the area could raise concerns over regional security and international trade.

Iranian media identified the aircraft as an MQ-9 Reaper, a remotely operated drone widely used by the US military for surveillance and precision operations. However, details about the drone’s mission, location, and whether it was actually destroyed remain unverified.

The IRGC claimed the incident was part of a broader series of losses involving US drones in the region, while also alleging that dozens of MQ-9 Reapers had been intercepted or destroyed in recent months. These claims have not been independently verified.

The United States has so far remained silent on the Iranian announcement, with officials from US Central Command (CENTCOM) not issuing an immediate response.
