Google Unveils AI Model for Faster Weather Forecasts

Washington: Google has introduced “WeatherNext3,” an advanced artificial intelligence model designed to deliver faster and more localized weather forecasts with higher resolution.
The new AI model will provide hourly weather updates and offer more detailed monitoring of storms, rainfall and severe weather conditions.
According to Google, WeatherNext3 can generate forecasts at a spatial resolution of five kilometers, making them approximately five times more detailed than those produced by its previous model.
It can forecast surface temperature and humidity at a five-kilometer resolution, while surface winds can be predicted at a resolution of 10 kilometers.
The model is also expected to improve rainfall forecasting, with Google reporting error reductions of up to 50 percent compared with traditional forecasting systems on certain key metrics.
WeatherNext3 will use live data from satellites and ground-based weather stations to generate its forecasts, according to the company.
Beyond weather forecasting, Google said the technology could have applications in the clean energy sector, including helping power-grid operators and renewable energy producers better anticipate changing weather conditions and manage energy resources.
