France Initiates Talks with Taliban on Deporting Afghan Nationals
News Desk
PARIS: France has commenced discussions with the Taliban government to facilitate the deportation of Afghan citizens, particularly those with criminal convictions, back to Afghanistan, a diplomatic source confirmed on Wednesday.
Since the Taliban regained power in August 2021, France has not maintained diplomatic relations with the group, and its embassy in Kabul remains closed. However, Paris is collaborating with approximately 20 EU nations, including Germany, Belgium, and Sweden, to expedite the return of Afghans who are in irregular situations and deemed a threat to public order.
The Taliban, which lacks official recognition from the European Union, is reportedly eager to enhance its international legitimacy. The French foreign ministry has not clarified whether Taliban representatives will be permitted to visit France to expedite these procedures.
While the exact number of individuals eligible for deportation has not been disclosed, sources indicate that the discussions are part of a broader strategy to manage irregular migration and uphold public safety in France and other European nations.
