Food Poisoning Incident Leaves Over 70 Hospitalised in Buner

BUNER: At least 70 people, including women and children, fell severely ill due to suspected food poisoning after consuming meals at an engagement ceremony in the Sawari Bazaar area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Buner district, officials said on Sunday.
According to local reports and initial medical assessments, the guests developed acute symptoms of food poisoning, such as severe vomiting, abdominal cramps, and dizziness, shortly after attending the celebration hosted by a local resident named Waliullah. Emergency responders and local volunteers swiftly mobilized to shift the affected individuals to nearby medical facilities, where hospital administrations reported a sudden influx of patients overwhelming emergency wards.
The mass poisoning incident has renewed serious concerns regarding food safety standards and the lack of regulatory oversight on catering services operating during large public and private gatherings across remote districts of the province. Health experts emphasize that improper food storage, sub-standard ingredients, and unhygienic preparation environments frequently contribute to such outbreaks, posing severe public health hazards particularly during the warmer months.
District administration and provincial food safety authorities have initiated a formal inquiry into the incident to determine the exact cause of contamination.
Officials stated that samples from the leftover food have been collected for laboratory analysis, and stern legal action will be pursued against catering operators found negligent in adhering to prescribed health and hygiene protocols.
