Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan’s constitutional bench, led by Justice Amin ud Din Khan, directed all provinces to submit reports regarding the measures taken to combat environmental pollution.

The six-member bench, also including Justices Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Musarrat Hilali, and Naeem Akhtar Afghan, discussed the widespread pollution issue during the proceedings.

Justice Mandokhail emphasized that environmental pollution is a nationwide problem, not just limited to Islamabad, and pointed out the severe pollution in Punjab.

Justice Hilali raised concerns over the adverse effects of housing developments on the environment, while Justice Naeem Akhtar highlighted the destruction of farmland due to these developments, questioning what actions are being taken for future generations.

Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar inquired about the Environment Protection Authority’s role, expressing dissatisfaction with the ongoing case since 1993 and calling for its resolution.

Justice Mandokhail added that harmful additives in petrol were contributing to pollution, while Justice Hilali mentioned the impact of poultry businesses and marble factories in areas like Mansehra and Swat.

The Additional Attorney General requested a three-week extension to submit the report, which was granted by the bench. The next hearing has been adjourned.
