480 Newborns Die at Mithi Hospital in Eight Months

Mithi: The deaths of 480 newborns at Civil Hospital Mithi in Tharparkar have been reported during the first eight months of 2026, according to hospital records.
The records show that a total of 2,273 newborns were admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) between January and August, with 480 dying during treatment.
Hospital officials attributed the deaths primarily to malnutrition, low birth weight and various health complications among newborns.
According to the records, 70 newborns died in January, 39 in February, 54 in March, 47 in April, 65 in June, 69 in July and 61 in August. The figures provided do not include a breakdown for May.
May recorded the highest number of ICU admissions, with 365 newborns receiving treatment during the month.
The records further show that 1,387 children were discharged after their condition improved, while 106 were referred or transferred to other hospitals for further treatment.
Another 126 children were reportedly taken home by their parents against medical advice.
Sources said malnutrition and early marriages are among the factors contributing to low birth weight and poor nutritional conditions among children in the region.
Hospital officials were contacted for further details regarding the newborn deaths and the health challenges faced by patients, but the administration did not provide additional information.
The reported deaths have highlighted concerns over maternal and newborn healthcare, malnutrition and access to timely medical treatment in Tharparkar.
