Tropical Storm Champi Approaches China
News Desk
TAIPEI: Tropical Storm Champi is advancing towards China after causing significant damage in Taiwan and Japan’s southern islands, resulting in widespread power outages and flight cancellations.
The storm, which was downgraded from a typhoon, has seen wind speeds decrease to 102 kilometers (63 miles) per hour.
Taiwanese authorities reported that over 5,000 residents were evacuated as Champi unleashed fierce winds and heavy rainfall, leading to toppled trees and downed power lines.
Tragically, one fatality has been confirmed, with more than 600 individuals injured since the government began issuing warnings on Thursday.
In the aftermath, power has been restored to over 90% of the 340,000 households affected by the storm. However, many shops across northern and central Taiwan remain closed for a second consecutive day as the storm moves away from the island’s northeast towards the Chinese coast.
Officials have cautioned that coastal areas will continue to experience strong winds and swells.
As the storm approaches China, local authorities are on high alert, preparing for potential impacts.
Further updates are expected as the situation develops, with ongoing assessments of the damage in Taiwan and Japan.
