Shehbaz Sharif, Asim Munir Head to Saudi Arabia

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has arrived in Saudi Arabia for a three-day official visit, accompanied by senior government and military officials, as Pakistan seeks to further strengthen its strategic partnership with Riyadh and discuss emerging regional challenges.
The high-level delegation includes Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi.
The visit comes at a time of heightened diplomatic activity in the region, particularly amid ongoing efforts to reduce tensions between the United States and Iran.
Focus on Strategic Partnership
During the visit, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The discussions are expected to focus on Pakistan-Saudi relations, economic and strategic cooperation, regional developments, and matters of mutual interest.
Officials say the visit reflects the longstanding ties between the two countries, built on shared interests, mutual trust, and decades of cooperation in political, economic, and security matters.
The presence of senior civilian and military leadership highlights the importance Islamabad attaches to its relationship with Riyadh and regional coordination.
Diplomacy Amid Middle East Tensions
The visit is taking place as Pakistan continues diplomatic engagement aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East.
Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said Pakistan believes dialogue and diplomacy remain the only sustainable path toward resolving disputes and preventing further escalation.
He added that Pakistan is actively involved in diplomatic efforts related to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and supports peaceful initiatives by all sides.
According to the Foreign Office, Oman is also playing a constructive role in facilitating diplomatic contacts, which Pakistan appreciates.
Regional Issues on Agenda
Officials expect regional security developments, including the evolving situation between the United States and Iran, to be among the key topics discussed during meetings with Saudi leadership.
Pakistan has maintained that peaceful negotiations are essential for resolving regional disputes and has expressed support for efforts that promote stability and cooperation.
The government says the visit will provide an opportunity to enhance coordination with Saudi Arabia on international and regional matters.
Religious Engagement
During his stay, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also expected to perform Umrah and visit the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, where he will offer salutations at the Prophet’s Shrine.
The religious component of the visit remains a longstanding tradition during official trips by Pakistani leaders to Saudi Arabia.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia share close relations spanning economic investment, energy cooperation, defence collaboration, and people-to-people links.
Islamabad has repeatedly described Riyadh as a key strategic partner and has sought greater cooperation in trade, investment, and development initiatives.
The latest visit is expected to further reinforce bilateral coordination while providing a platform for discussions on regional peace and stability.
