Saudi Air Defences Intercept Houthi Ballistic Missiles Over Riyadh

The Saudi-led coalition announced on Saturday that its air defences successfully intercepted and destroyed multiple drones and ballistic missiles targeting the capital city of Riyadh and the southwestern hub of Khamis Mushait, in a sharp escalation of regional hostilities.
A coalition spokesman confirmed that two armed drones launched by the Houthi movement toward Riyadh were neutralized mid-air, while two ballistic missiles aimed at Khamis Mushait—a strategic location housing a vital military air base—were similarly destroyed before reaching their targets.
The latest barrage has drawn fierce international and regional condemnation, signaling a renewed threat to Middle Eastern stability despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure a lasting truce. Hezam Al-Assad, a prominent member of the Houthi Political Bureau, downplayed international censure, asserting that the aggressive operation served merely as a preliminary rehearsal for a much broader escalation by the group’s armed forces.
Reacting swiftly to the offensive, Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), issued a strong denunciation.
He characterized the dangerous cross-border attacks as a flagrant violation of the Kingdom’s national sovereignty, warning that such hostile actions pose a direct and grave threat to civilian safety and the broader geopolitical stability of the region.
As international stakeholders scramble to de-escalate tensions, defense analysts expect heightened security alert levels across the Gulf region.
Diplomatic channels are anticipated to step up urgent consultations in the coming days to prevent further military deterioration and compel the Houthi leadership to halt cross-border missile campaigns.
