Power Shortages Disrupt Water Supply in Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi: Residents of Rawalpindi have been urged to conserve water as ongoing electricity load-shedding and rising demand have affected the city’s water supply system, according to the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA).

WASA Managing Director Shoukat Mehmood said power outages were creating difficulties in operating tube wells, pumping stations, and water treatment facilities, resulting in reduced water availability in several areas.

He said the most significant disruption was being experienced during prolonged power cuts, particularly between 10am and 2pm, which affected the pumping and distribution network. Water supply from major sources, including the Rawal Lake filtration plant and Khanpur Dam system, has also been impacted due to operational challenges.

The WASA chief directed officials to take emergency measures and ensure water reaches the worst-affected areas through water bowsers and other available resources. Officers were also instructed to address public complaints and maintain supply through alternative arrangements.

He said nearly half of the water supplied to Rawalpindi city and cantonment areas comes from Rawal Dam, making the preservation and efficient use of available water resources increasingly important.

WASA appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary wastage and use water responsibly, stressing that public cooperation is essential during periods of shortage. The agency said efforts are underway to maintain the supply of clean drinking water despite the ongoing challenges.
