Rawalpindi activates monsoon flood response plan

Rawalpindi: With heavy monsoon rains increasing the risk of flash floods and urban flooding, the Rawalpindi administration has shifted its focus to prevention and rapid response, putting emergency departments on high alert across the district.
The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) reviewed the city’s monsoon preparedness plan on Friday, with Deputy Commissioner Captain (Retd) Nadeem Nasir directing departments to ensure the availability of machinery, rescue equipment, and emergency staff before any weather-related emergency occurs.
Officials said the administration has prepared a comprehensive response strategy involving Rescue 1122, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC), Civil Defence, and other relevant departments.
During the meeting, Rescue 1122 and allied agencies briefed authorities on available resources, including heavy machinery, rescue boats, dewatering sets, manpower, and emergency equipment required to respond to possible flash floods and urban inundation.
The deputy commissioner instructed WASA to ensure uninterrupted drainage through major nullahs and sewerage lines to prevent water accumulation in vulnerable areas. RWMC was directed to continue sanitation operations during rainfall spells to minimize public health risks.
Health authorities were also ordered to maintain adequate stocks of medicines and keep ambulances on standby, while Rescue 1122 and Civil Defence were tasked with ensuring immediate availability of rescue boats, dewatering equipment, and specialized teams.
The administration has directed all assistant commissioners to closely monitor low-lying areas, vulnerable settlements, and water channels within their respective jurisdictions.
Officials said field teams will remain active throughout the monsoon season, with emergency coordination mechanisms in place for swift action.
Meanwhile, the deputy commissioner urged citizens to avoid unnecessary movement during intense rainfall, keep children away from swollen streams and accumulated rainwater, and immediately contact Rescue 1122 or district control rooms in case of emergencies.
