Pesco Declares Weekends Working Days

PESHAWAR: In a decisive bid to accelerate financial recovery operations, the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) has officially declared Saturdays and Sundays as regular working days across all its operational circles.
A formal notification regarding the schedule revision has been issued following directives from the upper management to curb mounting electricity arrears.
According to the notification, the measure has been enacted to ensure the strict realization of financial targets set for the upcoming fiscal years leading up to 2026-27. Field offices, recovery squads, and customer service centers will now operate through the weekends to pursue chronic defaulters and expedite outstanding bill collections, aiming to stabilize the utility’s strained cash flow.
The decision underscores the immense pressure faced by power distribution companies in Pakistan’s northwest to plug revenue gaps amid widespread line losses and non-payment issues.
Financial experts note that aggressive recovery campaigns are vital for maintaining grid integrity and minimizing circular debt accumulation, though critics argue that sustained administrative pressure must be matched by structural reforms in metering and billing systems.
Pesco administration has directed all superintending engineers and executive directors to personally monitor the weekend recovery drives and submit compliance reports on a weekly basis.
Further administrative steps, including intensified disconnection campaigns against industrial and domestic defaulters, are expected to roll out in the coming days as part of the broader fiscal strategy.
