Parliament Endorses Emergency Imposition in KP

News Desk

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution supporting the federal government’s decision to impose emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

This move follows the Centre’s declaration of governor’s rule in the province, initiated on Sunday, due to concerns over the provincial government’s alleged disengagement from combating terrorism.

During the session, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry introduced a motion regarding the emergency proclamation, which was adopted by a majority vote.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar opened the discussion, emphasizing the necessity of the federal intervention.

Notably, opposition members maintained a calm demeanor throughout the proceedings, contrasting with previous instances of disruption by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari criticized the PTI-led KP government, attributing the current security situation to its failures.

The imposition of emergency measures is seen as a critical step to restore order and address the rising threats posed by terrorism in the region, raising questions about the effectiveness of provincial governance.

Looking ahead, the government is expected to outline further strategies to stabilize the region and enhance security measures.

The National Assembly’s resolution marks a significant political development, reflecting the Centre’s commitment to addressing security challenges in KP amidst ongoing tensions between federal and provincial authorities.
