Noor Mukadam murder case: Zahir Jaffar sentenced to death

Islamabad: An Islamabad court has sentenced Zahir Jaffer to death for the murder of Noor Mukadam, bringing the high-profile case to a conclusion after more than four months of trial.
District and Sessions Court Judge Atta Rabbani announced the verdict after the court completed proceedings in the case. Jaffer was convicted of Noor Mukadam’s murder and awarded the death penalty.
The court, however, acquitted three other accused — Zahir’s mother Asmat Adamjee, father Zakir Jaffer and family cook Jamil.
The verdict was reserved earlier this week after the completion of final arguments. The court reached its decision after the counsel representing Noor Mukadam’s father concluded arguments during Tuesday’s hearing.
The trial lasted four months and eight days and attracted widespread public attention because of the brutality of the murder and the prominence of the families involved.
Noor Mukadam was killed in Islamabad in July 2021, with the case subsequently becoming one of the country’s most closely followed criminal proceedings.
The court’s decision now marks the conclusion of the trial at the district court level, with the conviction and sentence subject to the legal appeal process.
The verdict has been closely watched as a significant development in a case that sparked nationwide debate over violence against women, accountability and the effectiveness of Pakistan’s criminal justice system.
