Nepra Increases Industrial Electricity Tariff to Rs25.30

News Desk

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has announced a contentious increase in the industrial electricity tariff to Rs25.30 per unit, despite opposition from two of its members who argue that the actual marginal cost is Rs31.83 per unit.

This decision, made on Friday, also imposes an additional charge of Rs2.37 per unit on consumers’ November electricity bills to recover Rs25 billion under the fuel cost adjustment.

The revision has drawn sharp criticism from the industrial sector, which fears that the hike will adversely affect all electricity consumers, including those served by K-Electric and various distribution companies (Discos). The regulator’s four members unanimously held the Power Division accountable for failing to meet legal obligations within set timelines, leading to a deadlock that threatens to escalate electricity costs nationwide.

This tariff increase comes at a time when many households and businesses are already grappling with rising costs, raising concerns about its broader implications for the economy. Analysts warn that the hike could stifle industrial growth and exacerbate inflation, further burdening consumers already facing economic challenges.

Looking ahead, Nepra has indicated that it may take legal action against the Power Division for missed deadlines, and stakeholders are urged to prepare for potential further revisions in tariffs. The situation remains fluid, with upcoming meetings expected to address these pressing issues.
