Mojtaba Khamenei Holds Rare Meeting With Pezeshkian

Tehran: Iranian state media has confirmed that President Masoud Pezeshkian met Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei in a rare engagement that has drawn renewed attention to the secretive Iranian leader’s activities and health.
According to Iranian state media cited by Reuters, the meeting took place in late July as Pezeshkian entered the third year of his presidency. Discussions reportedly covered the country’s political, military and economic situation, including the ongoing war, employment, currency pressures and energy issues.
His messages have generally been released through state media, while limited information about his activities has fuelled speculation about his health.
During the meeting, Pezeshkian and Khamenei reportedly reviewed developments related to the Iran-Iraq war and discussed progress in the military sector. Economic concerns, including people’s financial needs, employment and management of national resources, were also discussed.
The two officials also reportedly considered issues involving Iran’s currency and foreign exchange market, energy supplies and economic ties with other countries.
The reported meeting follows another lengthy encounter between Pezeshkian and Mojtaba Khamenei that Iranian state media disclosed in May. That meeting was described as the first reported engagement between the Supreme Leader and a senior government official since Mojtaba Khamenei assumed the position.
Mojtaba Khamenei succeeded his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, after his father was killed in US and Israeli attacks on February 28. Mojtaba was also reportedly injured in the same attack.
Since taking over as Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei has made few public appearances, making every reported image or video of him a subject of significant interest.
On Saturday, Iran’s semi-official Mehr News agency released footage showing Mojtaba Khamenei seated with several people. The agency did not disclose when or where the video was recorded.
A closely watched leadership
The latest reports have renewed attention on the new Supreme Leader’s limited public presence as Iran faces significant political and economic challenges.
Pezeshkian was elected president on July 5, 2024, following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash. He was formally appointed by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on July 28 and sworn in before parliament two days later.
The reported meeting with Mojtaba Khamenei comes at a time when Iran is dealing with economic pressures, currency and energy challenges as well as wider regional security concerns.
While Iranian media has provided details of the subjects discussed, it has not offered further information about Mojtaba Khamenei’s health or explained his limited public appearances.
The latest footage and reports therefore provide a rare glimpse into the activities of Iran’s Supreme Leader while leaving many questions about his public role and health unanswered.
