Mahira Khan’s Humsafar Legacy Meets Her Newest Role

KARACHI: Fifteen years after ‘Humsafar’ introduced Mahira Khan to millions of viewers as the unforgettable Khirad, the actor has found a poetic way to revisit the role that transformed her career.
On Friday, Mahira shared a video on Instagram pairing two moments from different chapters of her acting journey: her iconic twirl as Khirad in the 2011 hit ‘Humsafar’ and a similar moment as Bilqees Bano, or Bilo, in her latest drama ‘Mitti De Baway’.
The timing has added another layer to the celebration. ‘Mitti De Baway’, which premiered this month, began airing around the same time of year that ‘Humsafar’ first appeared on television 15 years ago.
Addressing her fans, Mahira described them as her “dearest” and “most precious Humsafars,” reflecting on a career shaped by characters, change and the bond she has built with audiences.
“15 years… of surrendering to life, to the characters I picked and those that were picked for me,” she wrote.
For Mahira, the anniversary is more than a look back at a successful television drama. It marks the distance she has travelled since Khirad — from becoming a household name in Pakistan to establishing herself as one of the country’s most recognisable screen stars.
The role that changed everything
Based on Farhat Ishtiaq’s novel, ‘Humsafar’ centred on Khirad and Ashar, played by Fawad Khan, whose arranged marriage becomes entangled in misunderstanding, separation and heartbreak.
The drama became a major success in Pakistan and attracted audiences beyond the country, at a time when Indian and Turkish productions were drawing significant attention from Pakistani viewers.
Mahira’s portrayal of Khirad became particularly influential. The character’s resilience and uncompromising nature helped establish the actor as a leading television star and turned her into a household name.
The success of ‘Humsafar’ also became an important milestone for its other key figures. Fawad Khan gained a large following in India and later appeared in films including ‘Khoobsurat’, ‘Kapoor & Sons’ and ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’.
Director Sarmad Khoosat also went on to build a prominent career in television and film, directing projects including ‘Manto’, ‘Zindagi Tamasha’ and ‘Lali’.

Mahira has continued to acknowledge the special place ‘Humsafar’ holds in her relationship with audiences. For the drama’s 10th anniversary, she held a surprise question-and-answer session with fans on X, then known as Twitter.
Now, her latest drama offers an unexpected link to that earlier chapter.
In ‘Mitti De Baway’, Mahira plays Bilqees Bano, a character from a Punjab-set story in which she stars alongside Wahaj Ali. The drama has attracted strong audience attention following its premiere.
The contrast between Khirad and Bilo also reflects the evolution of Mahira’s career. One character belongs to the drama that defined an earlier era of Pakistani television; the other represents the actor’s continued willingness to take on new roles.
A new chapter beyond screen
Mahira’s 15th ‘Humsafar’ anniversary comes during a particularly eventful period in her life.
Earlier this month, the 41-year-old actor announced that she is expecting her second child while appearing at the Toronto International Film Festival. The news marks another major personal milestone, years after the birth of her son Azlan.
At the same time, her return to television with ‘Mitti De Baway’ has placed her back in the spotlight.
