KATHMANDU: An Indian national was killed and a New Zealander injured on Tuesday when two helicopters collided while preparing to land in the Mount Everest region of Nepal, authorities confirmed.

The chief district officer of Solukhumbu district, Kaman Singh Thapa Magar, reported that the New Zealander has been rescued following the incident, which occurred in the base camp area of Mount Everest.

The helicopters involved were operated by private firms Fishtail Air and Dynasty Air. Fishtail Air stated that its helicopter was carrying passengers who had been previously rescued from the Everest region when the crash occurred.

Both the Indian and New Zealander were identified as tourists, according to a Fishtail Air official, while a representative from Dynasty Air noted that their helicopter was transporting cargo only.

This tragic accident highlights the risks associated with air travel in the region, particularly during the peak trekking season when helicopters are frequently used to transport hikers and climbers.

In light of this incident, authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The accident follows a recent helicopter crash in Uttarakhand, India, which resulted in six fatalities, raising concerns about aviation safety in mountainous areas.
