LONDON: An Indian court has granted bail to Jagtar Singh Johal, a British Sikh blogger from Scotland who has been detained in India for nearly nine years, with family and advocates confirming his anticipated release within days.
Johal, a resident of Dumbarton in west Scotland, was initially taken into custody in November 2017 while visiting India for his wedding over allegations linking him to a conspiracy targeting right-wing Hindu leaders.
His brother, Gurpreet Singh Johal, shared the breakthrough in a video statement posted on social media platform X, expressing immense relief and describing the development as deeply encouraging news for the family.
In a formal statement released by Reprieve—a prominent UK-based human rights charity that has consistently campaigned for his freedom—Gurpreet emphasized that the primary focus remains on seeing Johal finally walk out of prison after an arduous legal battle.
The protracted detention of the British blogger has long been a subject of significant diplomatic and human rights scrutiny, drawing repeated concerns from UK lawmakers, including his local Member of Parliament, Douglas McAllion.
