News Desk
GWADAR: A local fisherman rescued two green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) in Ganz village, western Gwadar, and safely released them into the sea, highlighting the role of coastal communities in protecting marine biodiversity along Balochistan’s Makran coast.
The fisherman, identified asTariq, helped the two turtles return safely to their natural habitat, an act praised by marine conservation advocates as a positive step towards protecting vulnerable marine species.
Marine life along the Balochistan coast faces growing threats from illegal and destructive fishing practices, including the use of trawl nets and wire-mesh nets.
Sea turtles can become entangled in such equipment, leaving them seriously injured or resulting in their deaths.
Local residents say that sea turtle sightings along the Makran coast have increased over the past few months, highlighting the need for stronger monitoring, responsible fishing practices and effective protection of marine habitats.
Zarif Baloch, a local environmental journalist, described the rescue and release as an encouraging development for marine conservation. He noted that growing awareness among local communities has encouraged fishermen to play a more active role in protecting sea turtles and other marine life.
Tariq’s action demonstrates how local fishing communities can contribute to the conservation of endangered marine species. However, sustained efforts are needed to address the threats posed by destructive fishing methods.
Government agencies, fishing communities and environmental organizations have an important role to play in promoting sustainable fishing, preventing harmful practices and safeguarding sea turtles and their habitats along the Balochistan coast.
