Govt Urges JI to Postpone Long March Over Relief

LAHORE: In a bid to defuse rising political tension, the federal government has officially requested Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) to postpone its planned long march towards Islamabad, citing serious security concerns and assuring swift economic relief for the public.
The development came during another crucial round of negotiations held between the government’s designated negotiating team and representatives of Jamaat-e-Islami in Lahore.
The ruling coalition assured the religious-political party that concrete measures are being finalized to alleviate the financial burden on citizens grappling with high inflation and petroleum levies.
The ongoing standoff stems from widespread public anger over soaring fuel prices and heavy taxation, which prompted JI leadership to announce a decisive march on the federal capital.
Analysts note that diffusing this confrontation is critical for the administration, as simultaneous economic and political crises threaten to destabilize urban centers and disrupt public order.
Both sides are expected to hold further consultations in the coming days to review the government’s relief proposals. Jamaat-e-Islami leadership has indicated it will consult its central executive council before making a final decision on whether to call off or reschedule the protest.
