Islamabad: The tradition of the loud drum beaters (Dholwalas) announcing the beginning of Sehri time in the wee hours continues to captivate the attention of citizens in various cities across the country, including Islamabad, during the holy month of Ramazan.
According to a report aired by a private news channel, drummers are once again making their presence felt in the streets, playing their role in waking residents despite the age of modern technology.
While the popularity of drummers may have waned compared to the past, the tradition is still celebrated in some cities during the holy month, as noted by a resident of the capital city.
“We still beat the drum at Sehri, and we feel very happy to wake the people up during Ramazan,” said an elderly drum beater in Faisalabad.
Despite technological advancements reducing the necessity for manual wake-up calls for Sehri, many individuals still cherish this custom.
They believe that Ramazan festivities remain incomplete without the presence of traditional drum beaters, as expressed by another citizen of Gujranwala.
A resident of Islamabad city reminisced that this Ramazan, the drum’s sound evokes memories of our childhood. Even today, children are delighted to hear the drum’s beat in the morning.
“People of Peshawar city not only cherish the age-old tradition of the drumbeat wake-up call but also eagerly anticipate the sound of a drum beater in the early morning,” said a resident of KP.
“I don’t undertake this duty for monetary gain, but solely for the sake of the hereafter,” said a drummer.
