Customs authorities at the Jinnah International Airport successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle 18 high-end smartphones into the country from Dubai, recovering the devices concealed directly on the bodies of incoming passengers.
According to airport officials, routine profiling and vigilant surveillance of international arrivals led to the interception of the suspects shortly after they disembarked from a flight originating in the United Arab Emirates.
A thorough physical search uncovered the expensive mobile phones ingeniously strapped to the passengers’ bodies in an effort to evade mandatory customs duties and taxes.
The illicit trafficking of mobile devices remains a persistent challenge for revenue authorities in Pakistan, where high import duties and regulatory levies on luxury electronics often incentivize black-market operations.
Smuggling syndicates frequently exploit commercial air routes, utilizing human couriers to bypass state exchequer checks and flood local markets with untaxed communication technology.
In the wake of this interception, customs intelligence has launched a comprehensive investigation to dismantle the broader network operating behind the couriers. Officials confirmed that the confiscated smartphones have been seized as case property, and legal proceedings under the Customs Act have been initiated against the detained individuals.
