Islamabad: As Eid-ul-Fitr nears, Muslims worldwide, including those in Pakistan, are busy getting ready for the celebration.

One important aspect of this preparation is the delicious sweet dish called saviyaan (vermicelli).

Originating from the Indian subcontinent, particularly popular in places like Gujarat and Rajasthan, saviyaan holds a special significance during Eid. Made from coarsely ground wheat grains, known as suji or saviyaan, this dessert is a must-have during the festivities, bringing joy to everyone who tastes it.

Saviyaan is loved for its aromatic spices, smooth texture, and sweet taste, making it a symbol of Eid-ul-Fitr’s essence. It represents togetherness and culinary joy for families and communities to enjoy and cherish during this special time.

Here’s the complete recipe for making saviyaan [vermicelli], a delightful treat perfect for your Eid celebration:

Ingredients:

  • Saviyaan [vermicelli](coarsely ground): 2 cups
  • Milk: 2 1/2 cups
  • Chinese (presumably referring to a type of herb or spice): 3/4 cup
  • Butter: 2 to 3 tablespoons
  • Cardamoms: 10 to 12 pods
  • Dry dates (cut lengthwise): 6 pieces
  • Dry fruits: 3/4 cup
  • Salt: a pinch
  • Sugar: to taste

Instructions:

Heat the ghee in a frying pan, then add Saviyaan and sauté them over low heat for a few minutes until they turn translucent. Remove the Saviyaan from the pan and set them aside.

In the same pan, fry the dry fruits, dates, and cardamom pods until they become aromatic.

Next, return the sautéed onions to the pan and add milk, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Cook the mixture over low heat until the milk thickens and reduces.

Once the milk has reduced and the mixture has thickened, remove the needles from the pan and place them on a serving dish.

Serve the needles hot or cold, as desired. This delightful dish makes a perfect addition to your Eid celebrations!
