NEWCASTLE: A driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a crowd of rugby league fans in Newcastle, Australia, on Saturday, injuring ten people, including children.

The incident occurred as thousands gathered to support the local Newcastle Knights ahead of their grand final match against the Sydney Roosters.

Witnesses reported that the 18-year-old driver, who was described as an enthusiastic rugby fan, was driving erratically before the crash.

Newcastle Mayor Gavin Morris stated, “He was revving the car, he was excited… Somehow he lost control of the car and he’s gone into the crowd.”

Among the injured, a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man are in critical condition, while two other young children also sustained injuries.

The driver has been taken into custody as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

New South Wales Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison remarked, “One person made a decision in a split second that put everyone at risk,” highlighting the potential dangers of reckless driving in crowded public spaces.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his concern, stating, “My thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic event.” As the investigation unfolds, local officials are expected to review safety measures for public events to prevent similar incidents in the future.
