Australia Urges Gaming Platforms to Address Child Safety Concerns

CANBERRA:
Australia’s online safety regulator has identified significant child safety gaps in popular gaming platforms such as Steam, Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft, urging these companies to enhance their protective measures for young users.

The Australian eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, emphasized the need for these platforms to ‘lift their game’ in safeguarding children from online risks, including cyberbullying and inappropriate content. Inman Grant stated, ‘These platforms have a responsibility to ensure that children can play safely and securely.’

This call to action reflects growing concerns among parents and advocacy groups regarding the potential dangers children face in online gaming environments. The regulator’s findings highlight the urgent need for improved safety protocols, which could lead to stricter regulations and increased scrutiny of gaming companies.

Inman Grant has indicated that the eSafety Commission will continue to monitor these platforms closely and may implement new guidelines to enforce compliance. Upcoming discussions with industry leaders are expected to address these issues and explore collaborative solutions to enhance child safety in the digital space.
